Will Russia capture Lyman by...?

45%geopoliticsUpdated 3 min ago

What you need to know

This market is asking whether Russian forces will take physical control of a specific train station in the city of Lyman, in eastern Ukraine, by December 31, 2026. Lyman is a small but strategically important city — it sits on rail lines that connect several parts of the Donbas region, making its train station a meaningful military and logistical target. A Yes means Russian troops actually hold that station. A No means Ukraine still controls it by the deadline. The market settles Yes if an independent conflict-tracking organization called ISW (Institute for the Study of War) shows the train station shaded red — meaning Russian control — on their daily Ukraine map by December 31, 2026. The control must be real and physical: a peace deal that only announces Russian ownership on paper does not count; troops must actually be there. One important detail: if the station briefly appears red due to a map error, that does not count — the shading must persist through at least one full daily update cycle. No recent news directly addresses the front line around Lyman or the train station. The provided headlines cover broader war context — Ukrainian drone strikes inside Russia, a Zelensky-Trump meeting at the G7 — but nothing specific to ground movement near Lyman. The key thing to watch for would be ISW map updates showing Russian advances into or around the city itself. Ground warfare in eastern Ukraine is genuinely hard to predict because progress is measured in city blocks, not kilometers, and can shift quickly or stall for months. The market prices this at roughly 45% by end of 2026 but only 6% by June 2026 — so the market sees it as a real but slow-moving possibility. Ceasefire negotiations, seasonal weather affecting ground conditions, weapons supplies to Ukraine, and Russian troop rotations all play a role that no one outside military command fully knows in advance.

How this resolves

Resolves December 31, 2026

This market will resolve to “Yes” if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures the Lyman railroad station located on Vulytsya Pryvokzalʹna by December 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET. The railroad station will be considered captured if any part of the train station icon is shaded red on the ISW map (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375) by the resolution date. If the area is not shaded red by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, the market will resolve to “No”. For any change on the ISW map to qualify for this market’s resolution, the relevant shading indicating Russian control must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update is published, regardless of the date. Any continuous shading which reflects either “Assessed Russian Control”, “Assessed Russian Advance In Ukraine”, or “Assessed Russian Gains in the Past 24 Hours” will qualify. “Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas in Ukraine” will not qualify. If Russia comes into control of this territory as a result of a negotiated settlement, this will qualify for a 'Yes' resolution, regardless of whether it is shaded red in the ISW map. An announcement of a negotiated settlement which gives Russia de jure control will not qualify. Actual control must be established. Once Russia captures the railroad station, any subsequent loss of control will not be considered towards the resolution of this market. If the ISW map is rendered unavailable, information from DeepStateMap (https://deepstatemap.live/) may be used. If information from both the ISW and DeepStateMap are rendered permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used. Note: Any temporary glitches or errors in the map will not be considered.
