Resolution Criteria
This market will resolve according to the city announced to host Eurovision 2027. This market will resolve immediately based on the official announcement for which city will host Eurovision 2027, regardless of whether that decision is later changed or the city hosts the event. If no decision is announced by December 31, 2026, 11:59PM ET, this market will resolve to "Other". The resolution source for this market will be information from Eurovision, including https://www.eurovision.com/, or a consensus of credible reporting.
Sofia is the heavily-backed favourite to host Eurovision 2027 in current prediction market trading, with Burgas a distant second and other Bulgarian cities making up the remainder of meaningful volume. The market reflects the strong expectation that Bulgaria will host the contest following its 2025 or 2026 victory, with trading concentrated almost entirely on Bulgarian cities. Resolution follows the official Eurovision announcement, expected well before the December 2026 deadline.
Market structure
The market lists 16 possible host cities, but volume is heavily concentrated on two outcomes: Sofia and Burgas, with other Bulgarian cities — including Plovdiv and Varna — accounting for a small residual share. Trading is effectively a Bulgarian intra-national contest. Resolution triggers on the official host-city announcement from Eurovision, regardless of any subsequent changes. If no announcement is made by 31 December 2026, the market resolves to 'Other'.
Background
Eurovision's host city is determined by the winning country from the preceding contest, which then selects a domestic venue through a national bidding or appointment process. Bulgaria has a history of strong Eurovision performances and last won the contest in circumstances that would confer hosting rights for 2027. Sofia, as the capital and largest city, is the default candidate for major international events, but Bulgarian broadcasters have previously considered regional cities — Burgas, Varna, and Plovdiv among them — as viable hosts. The European Broadcasting Union works with the winning broadcaster to assess venue capacity, infrastructure, and broadcast technical requirements before a city is formally confirmed.
Key factors
The primary factor is the decision of the Bulgarian national broadcaster, BNT, which holds responsibility for selecting and presenting a host city to the EBU. Sofia's status as the capital gives it established infrastructure advantages, including the National Palace of Culture, a proven large-scale venue. Burgas, on the Black Sea coast, has been discussed in coverage of the bidding process as a challenger, potentially offering a distinctive setting and strong regional support. The EBU's technical and capacity requirements — typically demanding arenas of 10,000 seats or more alongside broadcast facilities — constrain which cities are viable. Political considerations within Bulgaria, including regional development priorities, can influence broadcaster decisions. The timing of the announcement also matters: once confirmed, the market resolves immediately on that announcement, making any subsequent reversal irrelevant to resolution. Delays in the national selection process could push confirmation closer to the December 2026 deadline.
FAQ
How is the Eurovision 2027 host city market resolved?
The market resolves on the official announcement of which city will host Eurovision 2027, using Eurovision's own communications at eurovision.com or a consensus of credible reporting as the source of truth. The resolution locks in on the announcement date, even if the decision is later reversed.
When does the Eurovision 2027 host city market resolve?
The market resolves as soon as an official host-city announcement is made, which could occur at any point before the deadline. If no city has been officially announced by 31 December 2026 at 11:59 PM ET, the market resolves to 'Other'.
What happens if the announced host city later changes or is cancelled?
The market resolves based solely on the first official announcement, regardless of subsequent changes. If a city is announced and later replaced, the market has already resolved and the outcome stands. Only a complete absence of any announcement by the deadline triggers the 'Other' resolution.
What does the Eurovision 2027 host city market currently show?
Trading is heavily concentrated on Sofia, which is by far the heaviest-backed outcome. Burgas is a clear second with meaningful volume. Other Bulgarian cities including Varna and Plovdiv account for small residual shares, making this effectively a two-city contest within Bulgaria.
