Resolution Criteria

This market will resolve according to the person appointed as the next permanent head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. If no permanent head coach is appointed by October 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, the market will resolve to "Other." Appointments of 'interim,' 'caretaker,' or other non-permanent head coaches will not impact this market's resolution. An announcement of a new permanent head coach’s appointment before this market's close date will immediately resolve this market to the corresponding option, regardless of when the announced appointment goes into effect. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the NBA and/or the Dallas Mavericks; however, a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.

The Dallas Mavericks next permanent head coach market features a broad and competitive field, with volume spread across a large number of candidates rather than concentrated on a single frontrunner. Sean Sweeney is the heaviest-backed individual outcome, though the market remains genuinely open across more than two dozen named options. The market resolves upon an official permanent appointment announcement, with a fallback deadline of 31 October 2026.

Market structure

The market spans 26 named outcomes plus an 'Other' catch-all, with volume broadly distributed across a wide field rather than concentrated on one or two names. Sean Sweeney leads the individual candidates, followed by a cluster including Billy Donovan, Todd Golden, Tiago Splitter, Micah Nori, Tommy Lloyd, Frank Vogel, Dirk Nowitzki, Tom Thibodeau, and Nick Nurse. Resolution is triggered by an official permanent appointment announcement from the Mavericks or the NBA, or a consensus of credible reporting. If no permanent appointment is made by 31 October 2026, the market resolves to 'Other.'

Background

The Dallas Mavericks head coaching position became open following a period of significant transition for the franchise. The Mavericks have historically been willing to pursue high-profile and unconventional coaching candidates, as demonstrated by their appointments over the past two decades. The franchise's identity has long been shaped by its front office under owner Mark Cuban and, more recently, by the influence of Nico Harrison as general manager. The team's trajectory — built around Luka Dončić before his trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in early 2025 — has shifted the organisation's priorities, making the next head coach appointment a pivotal decision in shaping the post-Dončić era. The breadth of candidates under consideration, from experienced NBA head coaches to rising assistants and even club legends, reflects the scale of the rebuild the Mavericks are undertaking.

Key factors

Several structural factors will shape how this market resolves. The Mavericks' roster composition and competitive timeline matter: a franchise in early rebuild may prioritise a developmental coach, while one seeking immediate contention tends to favour proven head coaches. The front office's relationships and hiring philosophy will narrow the field before any public announcement. Candidates with existing NBA head-coaching experience, such as those who have led other franchises, bring established track records but may also carry higher salary expectations. Assistant coaches and rising names from within NBA or college systems offer lower-cost, longer-term options. The involvement of a basketball legend such as Dirk Nowitzki would represent an unprecedented move and carries significant uncertainty around whether a permanent role would be formally offered or accepted. Timing also plays a role: if the search extends into the summer, the pool of available candidates may shift as other teams complete their own hiring processes. Any interim appointment would not trigger resolution, meaning a prolonged search could push the outcome toward the 'Other' fallback.

FAQ

How is the Dallas Mavericks next head coach market resolved?

The market resolves to the person officially announced as the next permanent head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Interim or caretaker appointments do not count. The primary sources are official communications from the Mavericks or the NBA, with credible reporting consensus also accepted.

When does the Mavericks next head coach market resolve?

The market resolves immediately upon an official announcement of a permanent head coach appointment, regardless of when that appointment takes effect. If no permanent appointment is announced by 31 October 2026 at 11:59 PM ET, the market resolves to 'Other.'

What happens if the Mavericks appoint an interim coach instead of a permanent one?

An interim, caretaker, or otherwise non-permanent appointment does not trigger resolution. The market remains open until a permanent appointment is confirmed or the 31 October 2026 deadline passes, at which point it resolves to 'Other.'
