Background

Super Rugby Pacific is the premier southern hemisphere club rugby union competition, featuring franchises from New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, and the Pacific Islands. The competition was restructured into its current Pacific format in 2022, incorporating Pacific Island teams alongside the traditional New Zealand and Australian franchises. The 2025 season saw continued competitiveness among the New Zealand sides, with the Blues, Chiefs, Crusaders, and Hurricanes consistently featuring in finals contention alongside Australian challengers such as the Brumbies and Reds. The Chiefs won the 2024 title, maintaining New Zealand's strong record in the competition. The 2026 edition is expected to run its regular season through the first half of the year before culminating in a knockout final series.

Key factors

Several structural factors could shape which team wins the 2026 Grand Final. New Zealand franchises have historically dominated Super Rugby finals, but Australian sides — particularly the Brumbies and Reds — have closed the gap in recent seasons. Injury to key players during the regular season or playoffs is a significant variable, as is player availability around international windows. Home ground advantage in the knockout rounds can influence outcomes, as Grand Finals hosted in a team's home city tend to attract partisan support. Coaching continuity and squad depth across the full season, rather than just peak form, are determinative in a competition with a compressed schedule. The draw for the playoff bracket, which determines which sides meet in semifinals, can meaningfully affect which teams reach the final. Pacific Island representatives and Australian wildcards can also create upset conditions in the knockout rounds.
