Resolution Criteria
This market will resolve to "Yes" if any song by the listed artist is in the #1 spot on the Spotify Top 50 - Global chart for any day of the relevant month, ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". Only primary artist profiles will qualify; features or collaborations under another artist profile will not qualify to resolve the featured artist to "Yes". The resolution source for this market will be Spotify, specifically the Spotify Top 50 - Global chart, which can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZEVXbMDoHDwVN2tF.
Olivia Rodrigo is the overwhelmingly heaviest-backed artist to have a number-one hit on the Spotify Top 50 – Global chart in May 2026, with Ariana Grande the next most heavily concentrated outcome. The market covers 13 named artists and resolves to 'Yes' for any artist whose song occupies the number-one position on that chart for at least one day during May. Resolution is confirmed against the official Spotify Top 50 – Global playlist by 31 May 2026.
Market structure
The market contains 13 individual yes/no outcomes, one per listed artist. Volume is extremely concentrated: Olivia Rodrigo commands near-unanimous backing, while Ariana Grande is the only other outcome with heavy support. The remaining eleven artists — including The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, and Gracie Abrams — carry broadly distributed but modest levels of interest. Resolution requires a song credited to the artist's primary Spotify profile to reach number one on the Spotify Top 50 – Global chart on any single day in May 2026.
Background
The Spotify Top 50 – Global chart aggregates daily streaming data across Spotify's entire global user base and is one of the most widely cited real-time indicators of commercial music performance worldwide. May is historically an active release month, falling between the spring and summer release windows when major labels often schedule high-profile drops to capture streaming momentum ahead of the summer. The artists listed span pop, Latin, R&B, and alternative genres, reflecting the breadth of acts capable of reaching number one on a chart that draws listeners from every major streaming market. Features and collaborative credits on other artists' profiles are explicitly excluded, meaning only tracks on which a listed artist is the lead act qualify.
Key factors
A confirmed new release from any listed artist during May would significantly alter the resolution picture, as catalogue tracks rarely displace active chart leaders without promotional impetus. The specific release date within the month matters: a track released in the final days of May has fewer qualifying days to reach number one. Competition from unlisted artists — particularly breakout acts or large global releases — could prevent any listed artist from reaching the top position at all, which would resolve all outcomes to 'No'. Streaming platform behaviour such as playlist placement, algorithmic promotion, and regional weighting within the global chart can accelerate or suppress chart movement. For artists such as Bad Bunny and The Weeknd, whose markets sit at very low backing levels, an unannounced release or a viral moment would be the most plausible route to number one. The exclusion of feature credits means collaborations released under another artist's profile carry no resolution value regardless of streaming volume.
FAQ
How is the 'Which artists will have #1 hits in May?' market resolved?
Each artist resolves to 'Yes' if any song credited to their primary Spotify artist profile reaches the number-one position on the Spotify Top 50 – Global chart for at least one calendar day in May 2026 Eastern Time. Features or collaborations listed under another artist's profile do not qualify.
When does the May 2026 artist number-one market resolve?
The resolution deadline is 31 May 2026. The market resolves once Spotify's Top 50 – Global chart data is confirmed for all days of May. Any qualifying number-one placement on any single day during the month is sufficient to resolve an artist to 'Yes'.
What happens if an artist is only featured on a number-one song rather than the lead act?
A feature credit does not qualify. Only songs released under an artist's own primary Spotify profile count toward resolution. If an artist appears as a guest on another act's chart-topping track, that artist's individual market outcome still resolves to 'No'.
What does the May 2026 artist number-one market currently show?
Olivia Rodrigo is the near-unanimous heaviest-backed outcome. Ariana Grande is the only other artist with substantial backing. The remaining artists — including The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, and Gracie Abrams — carry modest and broadly distributed levels of market interest.
