Resolution Criteria
This market will resolve to “Yes” if the listed artist officially releases a new album between January 1 and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM PT (Los Angeles time). Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. Officially released means that a newly released album is officially available for download or streaming (not including live events) by the resolution date. Re-releases, deluxe editions, compilations, or greatest hits albums will not count, unless they contain at least 50% tracks that have never been officially released in any format prior to the album's release. The resolution source will be any official streaming or download site, e.g. Apple Music or Spotify.
This market tracks which of 22 listed artists will officially release a new studio album in 2026, resolving 'Yes' for each artist who makes a qualifying release available on streaming or download platforms before 31 December 2026. Volume is heavily concentrated on Olivia Rodrigo as the heaviest-backed outcome, followed by a cluster including Sabrina Carpenter, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Bieber, and Beyoncé. Each artist is treated as a separate binary market, resolving via confirmation on Spotify, Apple Music, or equivalent official platforms.
Market structure
The market covers 22 named artists, each resolved independently as a binary Yes/No outcome. Qualifying releases must be new albums with predominantly unreleased material — re-releases, deluxe editions, compilations, and greatest hits collections are excluded unless at least half their tracks are previously unreleased. Resolution relies on availability for streaming or download on official platforms by 31 December 2026 (23:59 PT). Volume distribution is uneven, with Olivia Rodrigo heavily isolated at one end and Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish, and Rihanna among the least backed.
Background
The music industry's release calendar has become increasingly unpredictable in the streaming era, with artists exercising greater autonomy over timing and format. Several artists in this market have publicly discussed or hinted at upcoming projects, whilst others have been silent for extended periods. The inclusion of artists such as Frank Ocean — whose last studio album was released in 2016 — and Rihanna, who has not released an album since 2016 either, reflects long-running public anticipation. Kendrick Lamar's profile has risen sharply following his high-profile disputes with other artists in 2024 and his scheduled Super Bowl LIX performance in February 2025. Taylor Swift concluded a record-breaking global tour in late 2024, making her release timeline a subject of significant speculation.
Key factors
For each artist, the principal factors are: the time elapsed since their last studio release, any publicly reported recording activity or label announcements, the artist's typical release cadence, and whether prior singles or promotional activity suggest an imminent project. Artists with confirmed or heavily rumoured projects in progress carry different risk profiles to those who have been publicly absent. Label relationships, contract status, and any reported personal or professional disruptions can delay or accelerate a release. The 50% new-material threshold means that a release framed as a deluxe or anniversary edition could still qualify if it meets that criterion — introducing ambiguity around borderline cases. Resolution depends strictly on streaming availability, meaning offline-only or live-exclusive releases would not count. The calendar year deadline creates a hard cut-off; an album released in January 2027, regardless of proximity, resolves No.
FAQ
How is each artist's outcome in the 'Which artists will release new albums in 2026?' market resolved?
Each artist resolves Yes if a new album is officially available for streaming or download on a platform such as Spotify or Apple Music between 1 January and 31 December 2026. Re-releases and compilations do not qualify unless at least 50% of tracks are previously unreleased in any format.
When does the 'Which artists will release new albums in 2026?' market resolve?
The market resolves on 31 December 2026 at 23:59 PT (Los Angeles time). Any album made available for streaming or download on an official platform on or before that deadline counts. Releases on 1 January 2027 or later do not qualify regardless of how close they fall to the cut-off.
What happens if an artist releases a deluxe edition or anniversary album — does that count?
A deluxe edition, re-release, compilation, or greatest hits album does not qualify unless at least 50% of its tracks have never been officially released in any format prior to that album's release date. A standard deluxe edition adding a handful of bonus tracks to an existing album would not meet this threshold.
What does the market currently show for these artists?
Olivia Rodrigo is by far the heaviest-backed outcome. Sabrina Carpenter, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Bieber, and Beyoncé form the next cluster of heavily backed artists. Travis Scott, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd sit near the midpoint. Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish, and Rihanna are among the least backed outcomes.
